DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASPHALT & REFINED COAL TAR

We can all agree that sealcoatings are an indispensable component of pavement maintenance programs and that the majority of these materials are based either on refined coal tar or asphalt. It is therefore imperative that both property owners and sealcoating professionals understand the very basic differences between asphalt and refined coal tar. You may not remember, but coal tar was also used quite commonly for road construction as recent as the 1970s and is still in use for roofing compositions. The use of coal tar for road construction fell out of favor primarily due to its availability, and to a certain extent, to softening under elevated temperatures, much more so than with asphalt.
